Upcycling Windows for the Garden

I really liked this entrance display at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show.  A collection of old windows, with the original hardware and rough finish, gathered together with chains.  White vinyl die-cuts with different, yet similar, designs tied everything together to make one large garden screen.  It's so different! The fact that it's all white is perfect for my design style.

My friend, Cindy, and SIL, Elena, have been decorating their gardens for years using this technique on old windows.  They've also created specific holiday themed designs.  I know that Cindy has been saving windows like this for a long time.  I wonder how many she has left?  I just might have to start searching for some of my own!

I know! I could paint the designs with DecoArt's Gloss Enamel paint instead of using the vinyl. I have some of that already.  Of course, with my focus on "clearing out" the clutter in my life, this might not be such a great idea right now.

But I can keep it in my design files for "some day" projects can't I?  It would be fun .........

Have you made anything like this for your own garden?

  1. Thanks so much for mentioning me. I would love to have enough windows to do something like this. I have been sitting on a 3-pane with lilac vines from UCL and will have to put it together for this summer for sure. I will also keep an eye out for more windows.
I love the whole idea. This blog is really wonderful.

  2. Those are simply wonderful, Cindy! You know, you can always start with one, in a strategic place and build upon the collection. These are so so pretty with the vinyl -- I like the idea of that as it gives one options to switch out when the desire lands. Its just completely clever and how fun that your family has done this years past already!
