Artistic Cakes at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show
The Cake Decorating competition at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show this year followed the "Art in the Garden" theme of the show. There were some really creative designs.  I listened to many attendees commenting on the cakes and wondering if they were really made with frosting, sugar, etc.  The were looking at food in a new light.

When I took my first Wilton Cake decorating class years ago, I ended up painting the flowers instead of piping on 3 dimensional flowers, for the final project. I'm not sure it would have been a passing grade (if we were graded on what the teacher actually taught us) but it made me happy!  I just imagined my dessert looking different than the others.

Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to look at things in a different way. Edward de Bono

    1. I agree Marigene! I saw a few more at the show but wish I had time to find them all. Talented bakers for sure. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. I love cake decorating! I started with a Wilton class as well. It's so much fun. I made a cake last summer that looked like a fish coming out of the lake. We hooked a real lure and fishing pole to it. (It was a boy's birthday gift.) I used edible spray food coloring to paint the fish. Good memories of creating and then making someone happy with the creation. Thanks for reminding me!

    1. They were really cool! Cake decorating is like any art form. It can be difficult, detailed and magnificent or cute and whimsical fun. I'm sure it will taste yummy either way :) You should try it some time. Thanks for stopping by. Hope to see you again some day!

  4. Thanks Cathy. I didn't decorate these, just photographed them. They reminded me of the time when I did paint my own. I just painted tulips, nothing this fancy :) I appreciate your visit today.

  6. Wow - how gorgeous! I'm lucky to be able to just ice a cake without it looking a mess. LOL
