I took this picture last fall at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. I love art glass, the color blue and the way the light shines through the design. The way the waves and ridges of glass radiate out from the center of this piece just seems to shout happiness and beauty to me. A perfect image for the hope of a wonderful new year.
Glass is made from rough materials like sand, soda ash, limestone and recycled, crushed glass. There are other minerals added for strength, color or fluidity while working with the molten glass. The artist will shape and spin the extremely hot glass from the end of a 7 foot blow pipe. The glass is worked at a temperature somewhere between 1,600 and 1,900 degrees. I'm sure it's heavy and really hard to balance.
As I watched a demonstration of glass blowing that day I was reminded that life can be like this. Rough times and feeling like you're in the middle of a hot mess. The artist creates something new and beautiful from the rough raw materials that make up the finished glass. If you hang in there and give it your best with the life skills you've already learned, the ability to balance things and the hope that things will work out, you can find beauty after the struggle.
Wishing you blessings and beauty in 2013 and the ability to put the struggles of 2012 behind you.
Therefore, if any man is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away; look, new things have come! 2 Corinthians 5:17
